Tampouri

The tampouri, also spelled tambouri, is a long-necked string instrument belonging to the lute family, primarily used in Greek folk music, particularly in the regions of Thrace and Macedonia. It is considered a member of the tambouras family of instruments.

The tampouri typically has a pear-shaped body, a long neck, and a small soundhole. It is usually strung with three or four strings, though variations exist. Historically, gut strings were used, but modern instruments often employ nylon or steel strings. The strings are plucked, often with a plectrum, to produce a characteristic drone-like sound that provides a rhythmic and harmonic foundation for other instruments and vocals.

The tampouri's sound is characterized by its sustained tones and resonating timbre. It is commonly used to accompany singing and dancing, providing a vital element in traditional Greek celebrations and rituals.
