Rat Island (Houtman Abrolhos)
Rat Island is a small island within the Wallabi Group, part of the Houtman Abrolhos islands located off the coast of Western Australia. It is situated approximately 60 kilometers west of Geraldton. The island is known for its seasonal use as a fishing camp for Western Rock Lobster fishermen. These fishermen maintain semi-permanent residences, typically simple shacks, which are inhabited during the lobster fishing season.
The island's name is believed to derive from the presence of native rodents, rather than introduced rats. It forms part of a significant seabird breeding area within the Houtman Abrolhos, hosting numerous nesting seabird species. Rat Island experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The surrounding waters are rich in marine life, contributing to the region's importance for fisheries and biodiversity. Access to Rat Island is generally restricted and requires permits, reflecting the area's conservation status and the need to manage fishing activities.
