Sidecar (cocktail)

The Sidecar is a classic cocktail traditionally made with cognac, lemon juice, and orange liqueur. While variations exist, the proportions are typically around 2 parts cognac, 1 part lemon juice, and 1 part orange liqueur (such as Cointreau).

The origin of the Sidecar is debated, with both London and Paris claiming to be its birthplace, purportedly around the end of World War I. Two popular theories point to either the Buck's Club in London or a bar in Paris as its point of origin. Another story claims it was invented for an army captain who rode in the sidecar of a motorcycle.

The drink is usually served in a sugar-rimmed coupe or cocktail glass. The sugar rim is optional but commonly used to add a touch of sweetness and balance the tartness of the lemon juice.

Several variations of the Sidecar exist, often involving different base spirits or liqueurs. Some common variations include using brandy instead of cognac or substituting other citrus juices for lemon.
