Santa Maria del Canneto (Pula, Croatia)

Santa Maria del Canneto is the name of a former early Christian basilica and associated monastic complex located near Pula, Croatia. The site is situated in the bay of Peroj, just north of Fazana and facing the Brijuni islands.

The complex dates back to the 5th or 6th century AD. The basilica itself was a three-aisled structure featuring mosaics and architectural elements typical of the late antique period. The name "del Canneto" refers to the reedy or cane-filled environment of the location.

Over time, the basilica fell into disuse and was eventually abandoned. Its stones and materials were likely reused in the construction of other buildings in the surrounding area.

Today, the site of Santa Maria del Canneto is an archaeological site. Excavations have revealed significant portions of the basilica's foundations, mosaics, and other architectural fragments. These findings provide valuable insight into the religious architecture and art of the early Christian period in Istria. Ongoing research and conservation efforts aim to preserve and interpret the remains for future generations.
