Granovka

Granovka is a Russian term referring to a faceted glass, most commonly a drinking glass. The distinctive feature of a granovka is its faceted surface, typically created through molding the glass with numerous flat planes or "grans" (грани) around the body. These facets provide a better grip and also add strength to the glass, making it more resistant to breakage compared to a smooth-sided glass of similar thickness.

Granovkas gained significant popularity in the Soviet Union and are often associated with Soviet-era glassware. While variations exist, a common granovka features sixteen facets, although other numbers of facets are also seen. The design's sturdiness and practicality made it a staple in Soviet households, canteens, and public spaces.

The origin of the granovka's design is often attributed to Vera Mukhina, a prominent Soviet sculptor, although historical records are inconclusive and this attribution remains a common legend. Regardless of its true origins, the granovka represents a piece of Soviet design history, valued for its functional design and cultural significance. It is still produced and used in Russia and other countries today. The term "granyoniy stakan" (гранёный стакан) is also used, meaning "faceted glass."
