Mary Fisher (activist)

Mary Fisher (born June 5, 1948) is an American artist, author, and HIV/AIDS activist. She is best known for her powerful speeches delivered at the 1992 and 1996 Republican National Conventions, where she challenged the Republican Party's stance on AIDS and advocated for increased awareness, research funding, and compassionate care for those living with the disease.

Fisher was diagnosed with HIV in 1991, contracted from her then-husband. Facing stigma and discrimination, she chose to publicly disclose her status and dedicate her life to fighting the AIDS epidemic. Her speeches at the RNC were considered groundbreaking, as she humanized the disease and urged viewers to overcome fear and prejudice. She emphasized that AIDS did not discriminate based on sexual orientation or social status, and that it was a disease affecting all communities.

Beyond her activism, Fisher is also an accomplished artist, specializing in mixed media and printmaking. Her work often reflects themes of healing, resilience, and the search for meaning in the face of adversity.

Fisher has authored several books, including "My Name is Mary: A Memoir," which details her personal journey with HIV/AIDS, and "Sleep With the Angels: A Mother's Search for Peace After the Death of Her Child." She has received numerous awards and honors for her advocacy work and contributions to the fight against AIDS.
