Camillo Borghese (archbishop of Siena)

Camillo Borghese (born September 17, 1550, Rome, Papal States – died May 16, 1621, Rome, Papal States) was an Italian cardinal and Archbishop of Siena. He belonged to the prominent Borghese family.

Borghese was born to Marcantonio Borghese and Flaminia Astalli. His early education was focused on law, earning a doctorate in civil and canon law from the University of Perugia. He served in various judicial and administrative positions within the Papal States before entering the priesthood.

His ecclesiastical career progressed rapidly. He served as a canon of St. Peter's Basilica and held several important posts in the Papal court, including those of papal vice-camerlengo and Governor of Rome.

In 1596, he was appointed Archbishop of Siena, a position he held until he was created a cardinal. He was elevated to the cardinalate by Pope Clement VIII in the consistory of June 5, 1596, and assigned the title of Cardinal Priest of San Crisogono. He participated in the papal conclaves of 1605 that elected Popes Leo XI and Paul V.

He remained a prominent figure in the Roman Curia, serving on various congregations. He died in Rome in 1621 and was buried in the Borghese chapel in the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.
