5th Cavalry Division (India)

The 5th Cavalry Division (India) was an armoured division of the British Indian Army during the Second World War. It was formed in India in 1940 and disbanded in 1945.

Formation and Organization

The division was formed as part of the expansion of the British Indian Army in response to the escalating global conflict. It comprised armoured brigades and supporting units. Specific formations and unit composition evolved during its service. The initial intention was for the division to be equipped with Crusader tanks, but these were diverted to the Western Desert.

Operational History

The 5th Cavalry Division (India) never saw active service in a major theatre of war. Due to shortages of equipment and the shifting strategic priorities in the Far East and Middle East, it remained in India for the duration of the war. Its primary role was training and internal security. Elements of the division were deployed for internal security duties within India. It contributed to the training of armoured crews who later served in other theatres.

Disbandment

The 5th Cavalry Division (India) was disbanded in 1945 following the end of the Second World War, as part of the demobilization process. Its existence was relatively short, and its impact on the overall war effort was limited due to its lack of frontline service.
