Leo Clarke (VC)

Leo Clarke (1892-1916) was a Canadian soldier and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Clarke was born in Waterdown, Ontario, on April 1, 1892. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in February 1915 and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry.

Clarke earned his Victoria Cross during the Battle of the Somme in France, on September 9, 1916, near the Mouquet Farm. His citation reads: "For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. He was detailed with his section to clear the enemy out of a portion of trench and block it. He rushed forward at great personal risk, and, using his bayonet with great vigour, killed all the German soldiers occupying the trench in front of him. This trench was then successfully blocked. Shortly afterwards he observed a large number of German soldiers creeping over the top of the trench with the obvious intention of bombing his party. Although he was wounded, he jumped onto the parapet, and, with bombs in both hands, rushed at the enemy, bombing them with such effect that they were completely driven off. Five minutes later the enemy again attacked, but once more he completely routed them. Although again wounded very severely, he remained at his post until relieved. His magnificent courage and devotion to duty undoubtedly saved the situation."

Leo Clarke died of his wounds on October 19, 1916, at the age of 24. He is buried at the Varennes Military Cemetery in France. The Leo Clarke Armoury in Edmonton, Alberta, is named in his honor. He is remembered as a Canadian hero for his extraordinary bravery and self-sacrifice during the First World War.
