John Plumptre (elder)
John Plumptre (elder) (1679 – 1751) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1708 and 1747. He is distinguished as "elder" to differentiate him from his son, John Plumptre (younger), who also served as a Member of Parliament.
Plumptre was the son of Henry Plumptre, a physician of Nottingham, and his wife Joyce. He was educated at Nottingham High School and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He married Annabella Foljambe, daughter of Thomas Foljambe of Steeton, Yorkshire, in 1707.
He served as Mayor of Nottingham in 1707. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nottingham in 1708, a seat he held until 1715. He was re-elected for Nottingham in 1722 and sat until 1747.
He held various government positions throughout his career, including Commissioner of Stamps. He was also a prominent figure in Nottinghamshire society.
