Siegfried Köhler (conductor)
Siegfried Köhler (born June 30, 1923, in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany; died September 13, 2017, in Wiesbaden, Germany) was a German conductor and composer. He was particularly known for his work in opera and choral music.
Köhler studied at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. His career included positions as a Kapellmeister at various German opera houses, including those in Freiburg, Gießen, and Wiesbaden. He served as Generalmusikdirektor of the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden from 1971 to 1988.
Köhler was recognized for his interpretations of a wide range of operatic repertoire, from Mozart and Wagner to contemporary works. He also championed the works of lesser-known composers. In addition to his operatic conducting, he led numerous symphony concerts and choral performances. He held teaching positions, contributing to the training of future generations of musicians. His compositions include orchestral works, chamber music, and vocal pieces.
