Dhani (raga)

Dhani is a popular Hindustani classical raga. It is a pentatonic raga, meaning it uses only five notes (a pentatonic scale) in its ascending and descending forms.

Nature and Mood: Dhani is generally considered to be a light and pleasing raga, often associated with feelings of joy, devotion, and tranquility. It is frequently performed in the late evening, particularly around 9 PM to midnight.

Scale: The notes used in Dhani are, in the ascending scale (Arohana): Sa, Ga, Ma, Pa, Ni, Sa. In the descending scale (Avarohana), the notes are: Sa, Ni, Pa, Ma, Ga, Sa. The notes Re (rishabh) and Dha (dhaivat) are omitted in both ascending and descending scales.

Vadi and Samvadi: The Vadi (main note) of Dhani is often considered to be Pa (pancham) and the Samvadi (consonant note) is Sa (shadja).

Thaat: Dhani is derived from the Kafi thaat.

Common Performances: Dhani is often used in lighter classical forms such as dhuns, bhajans, and light classical pieces. Its simplicity and melodic nature make it a favorite for many vocalists and instrumentalists.
