Reception (astrology)
In astrology, reception occurs when one planet is located in a sign ruled, exalted, triplicity ruled, termed, or faced by another planet, and that second planet is said to "receive" the first. The receiving planet then acts as a host for the visiting planet. The nature of the reception modifies the influence of the visiting planet, for good or ill, depending on the nature of the receiving planet and the specific type of rulership involved.
The strongest forms of reception occur when the visiting planet is in the sign ruled by the receiving planet. Exaltation is considered the next strongest form of reception, followed by triplicity, term (or bound), and face (or decan).
Reception is considered a mitigating factor, particularly when the visiting planet is afflicted or debilitated. It can soften or redirect negative influences and enhance positive ones. If the receiving planet is well-dignified, it can significantly improve the condition of the visiting planet. Conversely, if the receiving planet is afflicted or debilitated, it can worsen the condition of the visiting planet.
Reception is a key consideration in horary astrology, where it can indicate the likelihood of a particular outcome or the quality of a relationship between two individuals represented by the planets in question. It is also used in natal astrology to understand the nuances of planetary interactions and their effects on the individual's life. The concept relies on the underlying principles of planetary dignity and debility, which describe the relative strengths and weaknesses of planets in different zodiac signs.
