Duke Alexander of Württemberg (1771–1833)
Duke Alexander of Württemberg (1771–1833), also known as Duke Alexander Friedrich Karl of Württemberg, was a member of the House of Württemberg. Born in Montbéliard on April 24, 1771, he was the son of Duke Frederick Eugene of Württemberg and Margravine Friederike Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt. He died in Gotha on July 4, 1833.
Alexander pursued a military career, serving in the army of the Russian Empire. He achieved the rank of General of Cavalry. He played a notable role in the Napoleonic Wars, participating in various campaigns against Napoleon's forces.
On January 28, 1798, he married Princess Antoinette of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, sister of Leopold I of Belgium, in Coburg. The couple had five children:
- Duchess Marie of Württemberg (1799–1860), married Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
- Duke Paul of Württemberg (1800–1802).
- Duke Alexander of Württemberg (1804–1885), married Princess Marie d'Orléans.
- Duke Ernest of Württemberg (1807–1868), married Nathalie von Eschhorn, Baroness of Grünhof.
- Duke Frederick William Ferdinand August of Württemberg (1810–1815).
Alexander's descendants include branches of European royalty and nobility, most notably through his daughter Marie who became Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and mother of Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria.
