Spon End

Spon End is a district located in the west of Coventry, England. It is historically significant as a major industrial area and a key entry point to the city from the west.

Historically, Spon End was a separate village from Coventry, growing up around the River Sherbourne and the Holyhead Road (now the A45). Its name is believed to derive from "spoon end," referencing a bend or hollow in the river.

The area was heavily involved in ribbon weaving during the 18th and 19th centuries, contributing significantly to Coventry's status as a weaving center. The concentration of factories and workers' housing led to significant urban development. Following the decline of the ribbon industry, Spon End transitioned to other forms of manufacturing.

Notable features of Spon End include the Spon Bridge, a medieval bridge across the River Sherbourne, and several listed buildings, including former ribbon factories and workers' cottages, which are reminders of its industrial heritage. The area also features newer housing developments and commercial properties. Redevelopment efforts have sought to balance preserving the historical character of Spon End with modern urban needs.
