Colors (Ken Nordine album)
Colors is a spoken-word jazz album by Ken Nordine, released in 1966 on Philips Records. It is perhaps Nordine's best-known work and is considered a classic of the "word jazz" genre, which Nordine helped pioneer.
The album consists of short, surreal prose poems exploring the evocative qualities and associations of different colors. Each track is dedicated to a single color, presented in Nordine's signature deep, resonant voice, accompanied by atmospheric and often dissonant jazz instrumentation. The music, arranged and conducted by several different musicians, serves as a backdrop and complement to Nordine's spoken narratives, enhancing the dreamlike and sometimes unsettling atmosphere.
Notable tracks include "Olive," "Pink," and "Indigo." Colors is praised for its innovative combination of language, music, and atmosphere, creating a unique and captivating listening experience. The album has been influential on artists in various fields, including music, literature, and visual arts. It has been reissued multiple times and continues to be appreciated for its originality and artistic merit.
