John Cahill (bishop)

John Cahill (1796 – 1856) was an Irish Roman Catholic bishop. He served as the Bishop of Limerick from 1840 until his death in 1856. Born in County Limerick, Cahill received his early education locally before being sent to Paris for further studies. He was ordained a priest and returned to Ireland, serving in various parishes within the Diocese of Limerick. Following the death of Bishop John Ryan, Cahill was appointed as his successor. During his episcopate, Bishop Cahill was known for his efforts to address poverty and social issues in Limerick, particularly during the Great Famine. He also oversaw the construction and renovation of churches and religious institutions within the diocese. He played a significant role in promoting Catholic education. He died in 1856 and is remembered for his dedication to the spiritual and material well-being of the people of Limerick.
