Cyfeiliog

Cyfeiliog was a medieval cantref (a Welsh administrative division, roughly equivalent to a hundred) in mid-Wales. It formed part of the larger principality of Powys. Its boundaries generally corresponded to the area between the rivers Dovey (Afon Dyfi) to the south and the Twrch (Afon Twrch) to the north, roughly encompassing the modern community of Machynlleth and surrounding areas in the historical county of Montgomeryshire (now part of Powys).

Cyfeiliog was known for its strategic importance and was often contested between various Welsh rulers and later, the English Marcher Lords. It derives its name from Cyfeiliog ap Gwerystan, who ruled the area in the 10th century. The descendants of Cyfeiliog often held power in the region.

The cantref played a significant role in the political landscape of medieval Wales, witnessing various battles and power struggles. It was gradually incorporated into the English marcher lordships after the Norman conquest, with parts coming under the control of families such as the Cherleton lords of Powys.
