Victor Harris (composer)

Victor Harris (1869-1943) was an American composer, conductor, and educator. He is primarily remembered for his contributions to choral music, particularly his arrangements of spirituals and folk songs.

Born in New York City, Harris studied at the National Conservatory of Music in New York, where he was a pupil of Antonín Dvořák. He also studied with Horatio Parker at Yale University.

Harris held various positions as a church musician and choral conductor throughout his career. He served as organist and choirmaster at several churches in New York City, including St. Mark's Church and St. Paul's Chapel. He was also the conductor of the St. Cecilia Society and the People's Choral Union.

His compositions include anthems, cantatas, secular songs, and arrangements for chorus. Some of his most well-known works include arrangements of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and "Witness." Harris's music is characterized by its accessibility and singability, making it popular with amateur and professional choirs alike. He played a role in promoting African American spirituals in the concert repertoire.
