Verdeja

Verdeja is a white grape varietal primarily grown in the Rueda region of Spain. It is known for producing aromatic wines with distinctive flavors of fennel, grapefruit, and a slightly bitter almond finish. Verdeja wines are typically dry, crisp, and possess good acidity, making them suitable for consumption on their own or paired with seafood and other light dishes.

The grape has a long history in Rueda, dating back to the 11th century. However, it almost disappeared in the late 20th century due to phylloxera and the planting of more popular international varieties. In recent decades, there has been a resurgence in interest in Verdeja, and it is now the dominant grape variety in the Rueda DO (Denominación de Origen).

Verdeja grapes are relatively small and thick-skinned, which contributes to the wine's flavor intensity and structure. The wines are often unoaked to showcase the grape's natural characteristics, although some producers may use oak aging to add complexity. The best Verdeja wines are considered age-worthy and can develop more complex flavors over time.

The Verdejo spelling is also used, sometimes interchangeably with Verdeja, especially in older literature or translated texts. While largely synonymous, in modern usage Verdeja is the preferred spelling for the grape varietal itself.
