Tour Perret (Amiens)
The Tour Perret is a skyscraper located in Amiens, France. Designed by architect Auguste Perret, it stands at 104 meters (341 feet) tall and was, at the time of its construction, one of the tallest buildings in France.
The tower was constructed after World War II, between 1949 and 1954, as part of the reconstruction efforts following the extensive damage suffered by Amiens. It was intended to symbolize the city's rebirth and modernity.
The Tour Perret is primarily constructed of reinforced concrete, a material favored by Perret for its durability and aesthetic possibilities. Its design is characterized by its simple, geometric form and the visible expression of its concrete structure. The tower's facades feature a repetitive pattern of windows and concrete panels.
Originally intended as a residence and office building, the Tour Perret has undergone various renovations and changes in use over the years. It remains a significant landmark in Amiens and a notable example of postwar architectural modernism in France. Its historical importance led to its classification as a monument historique in 1975, protecting it from demolition and unauthorized alterations.
