BT Group

BT Group plc (formerly British Telecommunications plc and commonly referred to as BT) is a British multinational telecommunications holding company headquartered in London, England. It has operations in around 180 countries and is the largest provider of fixed-line, broadband, and mobile services in the UK.

BT's history traces back to the Electric Telegraph Company, the world's first commercial telegraph company, founded in 1846. In 1912, the General Post Office (GPO) took over the UK's telephone network. British Telecommunications was established as a brand of the GPO in 1969 and became a separate corporation in 1981. It was privatized in 1984, with shares sold to the public.

BT Group's principal activities include providing fixed-line and mobile telecommunications services, broadband internet, television, and information technology solutions. Its retail division primarily serves UK consumers, while BT Enterprise focuses on providing services to businesses and the public sector. BT Global provides managed network services to multinational corporations.

The company has undergone significant restructuring over the years, including acquisitions and divestitures. Notable acquisitions include EE (formerly Everything Everywhere), a major mobile network operator in the UK, which significantly expanded BT's mobile service offerings.

BT Group is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It is regulated by Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator. BT faces competition from other major telecommunications providers in the UK, including Virgin Media O2, Vodafone, and Sky.
