Don John (horse)

Don John was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 1916 Kentucky Derby. Bred and owned by J. Sanford & Sons, he was sired by the stallion Commando out of the mare Golden Rule.

Don John was trained by William Jennings. He was considered an outsider leading up to the Kentucky Derby, and his victory at odds of 20-1 was something of a surprise. Jockey Johnny Loftus rode him to victory, defeating the favorite, Star Shoot.

While his Kentucky Derby win was his most significant accomplishment, Don John also had other notable performances during his racing career. However, details of his overall record are less readily available than those of more prominent Derby winners.

After his racing career, Don John was retired to stud. His success as a sire was limited, and he did not leave a lasting legacy in Thoroughbred breeding.

His name is sometimes confused with other horses named "Don," "John," or some combination thereof. Therefore, specificity is crucial when researching his individual accomplishments and pedigree.
