Bill Foster (basketball, born 1929)
William "Bill" Foster (born April 1, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died December 4, 2015, in Brandon, Florida) was an American college basketball coach. He is best known for leading Duke University to the NCAA Tournament Championship game in 1978, where they lost to Kentucky.
Foster graduated from Elizabethtown College in 1952, where he also played basketball. His coaching career began at the high school level before transitioning to college coaching. He held head coaching positions at Bloomsburg State College (now Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania), Rider College (now Rider University), Rutgers University, Duke University, University of South Carolina, Northwestern University, and Virginia Military Institute (VMI).
Foster's coaching record includes over 400 career wins at the college level. He was known for his strong defensive strategies and his ability to develop talented players. While his greatest success came at Duke, he also made significant contributions to the basketball programs at South Carolina and Northwestern. He retired from coaching in 1993 after his tenure at VMI.
