John Kean (New Jersey politician)
John Kean (1814-1895) was an American lawyer, banker, and Republican Party politician who represented New Jersey in the United States Senate.
Born in Elizabethtown, New Jersey on April 7, 1814, Kean was a descendant of John Kean, a delegate to the Continental Congress. He graduated from Yale University in 1833 and subsequently studied law, being admitted to the bar in 1837.
Kean embarked on a successful legal career and also became involved in banking. He served as president of the National State Bank of Elizabeth for many years.
His political career began with service in the New Jersey General Assembly. He was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1889, succeeding William Joyce Sewell. Kean served a single term, from March 4, 1889, to March 3, 1895. During his time in the Senate, he was involved in various committees, including those related to finance and commerce.
He was not a candidate for reelection in 1895. He died later that year, on November 4, 1895, in Ursino, New Jersey. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside, New Jersey. His son, John Kean, later served as a U.S. Senator from New Jersey as well.
