V.M. Ybor

V.M. Ybor, whose full name was Vicente Martinez Ybor, (September 7, 1818 – December 16, 1896) was a Spanish-born cigar manufacturer and entrepreneur. He is best known for founding Ybor City, Tampa, Florida in 1886.

Born in Valencia, Spain, Ybor established himself in the cigar industry in Cuba. Due to political instability and rising labor costs, he sought a new location for his operations. He first moved to Key West, Florida, in 1869, where he established the "Principe de Gales" cigar factory.

Seeking further expansion and stability, Ybor purchased land in Tampa, Florida, in 1885. He then established a cigar-manufacturing center that quickly became known as Ybor City. He attracted numerous Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants, who came to work in the cigar factories. The city flourished as a center of cigar production and a vibrant cultural hub.

Ybor's contributions extended beyond cigar manufacturing. He invested in infrastructure, housing, and other amenities to support the growing community. He is considered a key figure in the economic development of Tampa and a significant contributor to the city's cultural heritage. His legacy is preserved through the historic district of Ybor City, which remains a testament to his vision and entrepreneurial spirit.
