Tetris 2 (1990 video game)
Tetris 2 is a puzzle video game developed by Bullet-Proof Software and published by Nintendo in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy. Despite its name, it is not a direct sequel to the original Tetris, but rather a variant gameplay style.
Instead of clearing lines by filling them with tetriminos, Tetris 2 challenges the player to eliminate blocks by matching four or more blocks of the same color in a vertical or horizontal line. Blocks are dropped from the top of the screen, similar to the original Tetris, but gameplay focuses more on strategically building colored lines for elimination.
The game features a single-player mode where players progress through increasingly difficult levels, as well as a two-player competitive mode. In the two-player mode, eliminating blocks sends garbage blocks to the opponent's screen, hindering their progress.
Tetris 2 introduced several new gameplay elements not found in the original Tetris, including special blocks like "garbage blocks" which cannot be matched and must be cleared through adjacent color matches, adding a layer of strategic complexity to the gameplay. While not as universally acclaimed as the original, Tetris 2 offered a different take on the established Tetris formula and garnered a dedicated following.
