Bengazi (film)
Bengazi is a 1955 American war film directed by John Brahm and starring Richard Conte, Maureen O'Hara, and Richard Erdman. The film is loosely based on the Second Barbary War and specifically focuses on the daring raid led by Lieutenant Putnam to rescue American sailors held captive in Bengazi (Benghazi), Libya, by Barbary pirates in 1821.
The plot centers on Lieutenant Putnam's struggles against not only the hostile environment and the pirates but also internal conflicts within his own crew. The film is known for its action sequences, romantic subplot involving Putnam and an American woman held captive, and its portrayal of the historical events. While considered an action-adventure film, historical accuracy is somewhat compromised for dramatic effect.
