William Mitchell (judge)

William Mitchell (March 3, 1832 – December 15, 1900) was an American jurist and politician who served as a Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court from 1881 to 1900.

Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Mitchell was educated at Alexandria Academy and studied law under his father, a prominent attorney. He moved to Winona, Minnesota, in 1857 and quickly established himself as a leading lawyer in the state.

Mitchell was active in Minnesota politics. He served in the Minnesota State Senate from 1860 to 1864 and as Winona County Attorney from 1868 to 1874. He was known for his strong advocacy of law and order and his commitment to public service.

In 1881, Mitchell was appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court by Governor John S. Pillsbury. He served on the court for nearly two decades, becoming known for his legal scholarship, his clear and concise writing style, and his commitment to principles of justice and fairness. His opinions were widely respected and had a lasting impact on Minnesota law. He was considered a strong advocate of judicial restraint.

Mitchell's tenure on the Supreme Court was marked by significant legal developments, particularly in areas of tort law, property rights, and constitutional law. He played a crucial role in shaping the legal landscape of Minnesota during a period of rapid economic and social change.

He was considered one of the most influential justices in the court's history. He died in Winona, Minnesota, on December 15, 1900. William Mitchell College of Law, now Mitchell Hamline School of Law, was named in his honor.
