Bob Steele (swim coach)
Bob Steele (born Robert F. Steele) was an American swimming coach known for his long and successful tenure at UCLA. He coached the UCLA Bruins men's swimming and diving team from 1960 to 2001, amassing a career record of 215-98-2.
Steele's coaching highlights include leading the Bruins to the 1982 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship. His swimmers achieved considerable success at the national and international levels, including participation in Olympic Games. He coached several individual NCAA champions and All-Americans throughout his career.
Beyond competition, Steele was regarded as a mentor and developer of young men. He emphasized academics and personal growth alongside athletic achievement.
He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2003. His legacy continues through the swimmers he coached and the impact he had on the sport of swimming.
