Escalhão

Escalhão is a freguesia (civil parish) in the municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Portugal. It is located in the district of Guarda, in the Centro Region and subregion of Beira Interior Norte.

The parish is situated in a rural area and its economy is primarily based on agriculture, including the cultivation of olives, grapes, and cereals. The name "Escalhão" is believed to derive from the word "escada" (staircase), possibly referring to the stepped appearance of the landscape or a historical feature of the area.

Escalhão features a number of traditional buildings and landmarks, including the Igreja Matriz (main church) and various chapels. Like many parishes in rural Portugal, Escalhão has seen population decline in recent decades due to emigration to urban centers and other countries. The feast of the parish is celebrated annually in honor of its patron saint. The local gastronomy is representative of the Beira Alta region, with dishes based on local produce and meats.
