Catalyst (novel)
Catalyst, written by James Luceno, is a science fiction novel published in 2016. It serves as a prequel to the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and is part of the Star Wars expanded universe (now Legends, following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, though elements may be re-canonized).
The novel explores the early relationship between Galen Erso, a brilliant scientist, and Orson Krennic, a rising officer in the Republic (later Imperial) military. It details Krennic's manipulation of Erso, leveraging their past friendship and Erso's family to gain access to his kyber crystal research. This research is ultimately intended for use in the construction of the Death Star's superweapon.
Catalyst delves into the moral complexities of scientific research in wartime and the ethical compromises made in the pursuit of power. It also provides critical backstory and context for the events and characters of Rogue One, especially regarding the Erso family's involvement in the Death Star project and Jyn Erso's eventual rebellion. Key themes include ambition, betrayal, scientific ethics, and the corrupting influence of power. The novel expands upon the motivations of both Krennic and Galen Erso, shedding light on their individual roles in the creation of the Death Star.
