David Ferguson (geologist)

David Ferguson (1857-1936) was a Scottish geologist and mineralogist. He is primarily known for his extensive fieldwork in Scotland, particularly the Western Highlands, and his contributions to the understanding of the geology and mineral resources of the region.

Ferguson studied at the Royal School of Mines in London. His work focused significantly on the metamorphic rocks of the Highlands, mapping and analyzing their structure and composition. He authored several publications detailing his findings, including papers on the petrology of the region and the economic geology of various mineral deposits.

One of Ferguson's notable contributions was his detailed work on the Moine Thrust Belt, a major geological structure in northwest Scotland. He documented the complex deformation and metamorphism associated with the thrust, providing valuable insights into the tectonic history of the Caledonian orogeny.

Beyond his academic contributions, Ferguson was also involved in practical applications of geology, advising on mineral exploration and development projects. His expertise was sought after for identifying and assessing potential resources in Scotland.

He was a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and a member of other scientific societies. His research continues to be cited in studies of Scottish geology.
