Love (1920 film)
Love is a 1920 American silent drama film directed by Wesley Ruggles and starring Louise Glaum, James Kirkwood Sr., and John Bowers. The film is based on the 1852 Alexandre Dumas fils novel La Dame aux Camélias, also known as Camille.
The story follows Marguerite Gautier (Louise Glaum), a Parisian courtesan who falls in love with Armand Duval (James Kirkwood Sr.). Their relationship faces societal disapproval and the disapproval of Armand's father, Monsieur Duval (John Bowers), who fears the relationship will damage his family's reputation and Armand's sister's prospects for marriage. Marguerite, concealing a grave illness, is ultimately persuaded to end the relationship for the sake of Armand's family. The film depicts the tragic consequences of societal pressures and personal sacrifice.
While the film received some positive reviews for its performances, particularly Glaum's portrayal of Marguerite, it is not considered a definitive adaptation of the source material. Later versions of Camille have generally been more critically acclaimed. Love is now considered a lost film, with no known copies surviving.
