Howard Smith (actor)

Howard Smith (1893-1968) was an American character actor with a lengthy career in theatre, film, and television. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, Smith was best known for portraying gruff, authoritative, and often curmudgeonly figures, frequently in positions of power.

Smith began his acting career on the stage, appearing in numerous Broadway productions throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. His notable stage credits include "The Petrified Forest," "Bury the Dead," and "Death of a Salesman," in which he originated the role of Uncle Charley.

He transitioned into film and television in the 1940s, quickly establishing himself as a reliable and versatile performer. Some of his most memorable film roles include Mr. Welch in "Call Northside 777" (1948), Oliver Putnam in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (1947), and Grandpa Howard in "Summer and Smoke" (1961). He also appeared in films such as "Deep Waters" (1948), "The Damned Don't Cry" (1950), and "Midnight Lace" (1960).

On television, Smith made guest appearances in numerous popular series, including "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "The Twilight Zone" ("A Stop at Willoughby"), "Perry Mason," "Gunsmoke," and "The Donna Reed Show." He often played judges, lawyers, businessmen, or stern fathers.

Howard Smith died in 1968 at the age of 75. His extensive body of work has made him a recognizable face in classic film and television, cementing his place as a respected character actor.
