Olav Holt

Olav Holt (born February 13, 1935, died June 1, 2023) was a Norwegian engineer, professor, and researcher renowned for his contributions to the field of theoretical and applied acoustics, particularly within nonlinear acoustics and underwater acoustics.

Holt received his degree in physics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH), now the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), in Trondheim. He subsequently earned his doctorate in 1964. He spent a significant portion of his career at the University of Bergen, where he held a professorship in physics.

His research focused primarily on the fundamental physics of acoustic waves, exploring phenomena such as cavitation, acoustic streaming, and the generation and propagation of sound in complex media. He made notable contributions to the understanding of how intense sound fields interact with fluids and biological tissues. His work had implications for diverse applications, including medical ultrasound, industrial processes, and sonar technology.

Holt was an active member of the international acoustics community, participating in conferences and collaborations around the world. He mentored numerous students and researchers throughout his career, shaping the landscape of acoustics research in Norway and beyond. He authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications throughout his career, contributing substantially to the body of knowledge in his field.
