Nauka (ISS module)
Nauka, also known as the Multipurpose Laboratory Module (MLM), is a Russian science module of the International Space Station (ISS). It was launched on July 21, 2021, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, atop a Proton-M rocket, and docked with the Zvezda module on July 29, 2021.
Nauka provides additional research capabilities, crew work and rest areas, and cargo storage space for the ISS. It also includes a robotic arm built by the European Space Agency (ESA), called ERA (European Robotic Arm), which is used for moving payloads outside the Russian segment of the ISS.
The module has been significantly delayed throughout its development. Originally intended as a backup to the Zarya module, Nauka underwent substantial redesigns and experienced various technical issues, including contamination problems.
The docking of Nauka was not without incident. Following docking, the module unexpectedly fired its thrusters, causing the entire ISS to momentarily lose attitude control. This issue was resolved and ultimately did not result in any serious damage or compromise the safety of the station.
Nauka is a vital addition to the Russian segment of the ISS, increasing its capabilities for conducting scientific research in microgravity and providing enhanced living and working space for cosmonauts. The module's long and complicated history makes it a significant and notable element of the International Space Station.
