Matthew of Vendôme (abbot)
Matthew of Vendôme (died 1286) was a French cleric who served as Abbot of Saint-Denis from 1258 until his death. His abbacy was marked by significant building projects and administrative changes within the abbey. He is credited with commissioning improvements to the abbey church and its surrounding buildings. Prior to his election as abbot, he held other important ecclesiastical positions, gaining experience in managing resources and personnel. He was known for his capable administration and for defending the rights and privileges of the Abbey of Saint-Denis against outside encroachment. His tenure saw Saint-Denis continue to be a major center of religious and political influence in France. He was succeeded as Abbot by Giles of Pontoise.
