Bishop of Plymouth (Anglican)
The Bishop of Plymouth is a suffragan bishop in the Church of England, in the Diocese of Exeter. The title takes its name from the city of Plymouth in Devon, England.
The See was erected under the Suffragan Bishops Act 1534 in 1923. The bishop assists the Bishop of Exeter in overseeing the diocese, with a particular focus on the archdeaconry of Plymouth. This involves confirmation services, ordinations, pastoral care of clergy, and representing the Bishop of Exeter in various diocesan and civic matters within the Plymouth area.
The Bishop of Plymouth works in collaboration with other suffragan bishops in the Diocese of Exeter, each with responsibility for specific geographical areas or areas of ministry. The creation of suffragan bishoprics is intended to provide additional episcopal oversight and support to larger dioceses.
The current Bishop of Plymouth is James Grier.
