Makiwara

A makiwara (巻藁) is a padded striking post used in various martial arts, most notably karate, for training punches, strikes, and other techniques. It is traditionally made of a wooden board (typically cedar or pine) that is anchored to the ground or a wall, and covered with a wrapping of straw, rope, or other padding material.

The primary purpose of the makiwara is to develop the striking power, accuracy, and conditioning of the practitioner. By repeatedly striking the makiwara, a martial artist can strengthen their knuckles, wrists, and forearms, as well as refine their technique and understanding of impact. It provides resistance, allowing the user to understand the mechanics of their strikes and make adjustments for greater effectiveness. The makiwara also helps develop the mental focus and control necessary for effective combat.

Different types of makiwara exist, varying in height, stiffness, and padding. Some are designed to be flexible, providing more give and a different training experience, while others are more rigid. The type of makiwara used often depends on the practitioner's skill level and the specific training goals. A beginner may start with a softer, more flexible makiwara to avoid injury, while a more advanced practitioner might use a harder, more rigid makiwara to further develop their power and conditioning.

The makiwara is considered a fundamental piece of training equipment in many traditional karate styles, often used as a daily part of a practitioner's routine.
