Washington Bridge (Connecticut)

The Washington Bridge is a major bridge carrying U.S. Route 1 (the Boston Post Road) over the Housatonic River between the city of Milford and the town of Stratford in Connecticut. It is a steel girder bridge, having replaced a previous swing bridge at the same location. The current bridge was completed and opened to traffic in 1924. The bridge carries significant local and regional traffic and is a vital connection between the two municipalities. The original bridge at this site, predating the current structure, played a role in historical transportation routes along the Connecticut coast. The bridge has undergone repairs and maintenance throughout its history to ensure structural integrity and safe passage. It is often referred to as the Washington Bridge in contrast to other similarly named bridges in different locations.
