Thomas Wells (Rhode Island judge)

Thomas Wells (1806-1886) was a prominent lawyer and judge in Rhode Island. He served as an Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court from 1868 to 1875.

Born in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, Wells received his legal education and was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar. He practiced law in South Kingstown and later in Providence. Before his appointment to the Supreme Court, Wells held several local political positions, including serving as a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives.

During his tenure on the Supreme Court, Wells participated in numerous significant cases shaping Rhode Island law. His judicial opinions are noted for their thoroughness and attention to legal precedent.

Following his retirement from the Supreme Court in 1875, Wells returned to private legal practice in Providence. He remained active in civic affairs until his death in 1886. He is remembered as a respected jurist and a contributor to the development of Rhode Island's legal system.
