Kneeboarding (towsport)

Kneeboarding is a surface watersport where the participant is towed behind a motorboat on a buoyant, planing board and performs acrobatic maneuvers. The rider kneels on the board and is secured with an adjustable strap over the thighs. Unlike wakeboarding or waterskiing, the rider's center of gravity is much lower, making it generally easier to learn initially and offering a different style of riding.

The activity typically involves being towed at speeds between 18 and 25 miles per hour. The towrope is attached to the boat via a tow pylon or a similar attachment point. The rider uses the rope and the board's edges to carve across the wake created by the boat, allowing them to perform jumps, spins, and other tricks.

Kneeboards are typically made from molded fiberglass or similar composite materials. They often feature channels and fins on the underside to improve tracking and maneuverability. Cushioned knee pads provide comfort and support for the rider. Some kneeboards are designed with a hydrohook, a device that simplifies deep water starts by holding the rope until the rider is ready to begin.

Safety considerations for kneeboarding include wearing a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD or life jacket), communicating clearly with the boat driver, and being aware of the surrounding environment, including other boats and swimmers. It's also important to start slowly and gradually progress to more difficult maneuvers as skill and experience increase. Spotters are often used in the boat to monitor the rider and relay information to the driver.
