Steve Smith (ice hockey, born April 4, 1963)

Steve Smith (born April 4, 1963) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames, and St. Louis Blues.

Smith was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round, 53rd overall, in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He began his NHL career with the Oilers in the 1984-85 season and was a member of three Stanley Cup-winning teams in Edmonton (1985, 1987, 1990). He is perhaps best known for accidentally scoring on his own net in Game 7 of the 1986 Smythe Division Final against the Calgary Flames, costing the Oilers the game and series.

Following his tenure with the Oilers, Smith played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames, and St. Louis Blues. He was known for his stay-at-home defensive style and his physical play. He retired from professional hockey in 2000.

Since his retirement, Smith has been involved in coaching and player development.
