Tsumeb

Tsumeb is a town in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia, located approximately 430 kilometers north of Windhoek. It is renowned for its mineral wealth, particularly its copper, lead, zinc, and germanium deposits, which led to the establishment of a significant mining industry. The town's history is closely tied to the development of the Tsumeb mine, one of the most productive and diverse ore deposits in the world.

The Tsumeb mine operated for nearly a century, from 1907 to 1996, and produced an extraordinary variety of minerals, many of which were unique to the locality. Over 300 different mineral species have been identified at Tsumeb, including several that were first discovered there. This mineralogical diversity has made Tsumeb a popular destination for mineral collectors and researchers worldwide.

While the mine is no longer operational, Tsumeb remains an important economic center for the region. Its infrastructure and skilled workforce have allowed it to transition to other industries, including agriculture and tourism. The town also serves as a gateway to Etosha National Park, a major wildlife reserve in Namibia. The Tsumeb Museum houses a significant collection of minerals from the mine, showcasing the area's geological significance.
