Evermay

Evermay is a historic Federal-style mansion and estate located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Built in the early 19th century, its history stretches back to original land grants in the late 17th century.

History: The land that comprises Evermay was originally part of a larger tract granted in 1696. The current mansion was constructed around 1801 by Samuel Davidson, a prominent Georgetown merchant. Over the centuries, the estate passed through several owners, including members of notable Washington families. In the early 20th century, it was purchased by F. Lammot Belin, a diplomat, and his wife, and it was under their ownership that the gardens and grounds achieved their current renowned design.

Architecture and Grounds: The Evermay mansion is an example of Federal architecture, characterized by its symmetrical façade, refined detailing, and understated elegance. The estate encompasses a large, meticulously landscaped garden, featuring formal gardens, woodlands, and terraces. The gardens are noted for their design, mature plantings, and the overall preservation of a romantic, naturalistic aesthetic. They are considered one of the best examples of early 20th-century garden design in the region.

Present Day: Today, Evermay is a privately owned estate, often used for philanthropic events and private gatherings.
