Zhang Yong (restaurateur)
Zhang Yong (born c. 1970) is a Singaporean businessman of Chinese origin, best known as the co-founder, chairman, and former CEO of Haidilao International Holding Ltd., a popular hot pot restaurant chain.
Born in Jianyang, Sichuan province, China, Zhang Yong reportedly initially worked as a welder before venturing into the restaurant business. He co-founded Haidilao in 1994 with his wife, Shu Ping, and two other partners. The company distinguished itself early on through its emphasis on exceptional customer service, which included amenities like free manicures, shoe shining, and games while customers waited for a table.
Under Zhang Yong's leadership, Haidilao expanded rapidly across China and internationally, becoming one of the world's largest hot pot chains. The company went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2018.
Zhang Yong's success with Haidilao has made him one of the wealthiest individuals in Singapore. He and his wife became naturalized Singaporean citizens. His business acumen and focus on customer experience have been widely recognized and studied in business schools.
