Square (band)
Square (later known as T-Square) was a Japanese instrumental fusion band formed in 1978. They are best known for their smooth jazz and fusion compositions, particularly their melodies used in video games such as the Gran Turismo series and Final Fantasy.
The band was originally formed by Masahiro Andoh (guitar) and Jun Miyazaki (bass). They gained significant popularity in the 1980s with a revolving lineup of talented musicians, including notable saxophonists like Takeshi Itoh and keyboardists like Hirotaka Izumi.
Square's music blends elements of jazz, rock, funk, and Latin music, characterized by catchy melodies, intricate arrangements, and virtuosic instrumental performances. Their discography spans numerous albums, and they have toured extensively both in Japan and internationally.
In 1988, the band changed its name to T-Square, retaining the same core musical direction and continuing to release albums and perform. While lineup changes have occurred throughout their history, Masahiro Andoh remained a consistent member and driving force behind the band.
T-Square is recognized as one of the most influential instrumental bands in Japan, having inspired countless musicians and contributed significantly to the development of the smooth jazz and fusion genres in the region. Their music continues to be enjoyed by a wide audience, particularly those familiar with their contributions to video game soundtracks.
