Varaldsøy (municipality)
Varaldsøy was a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. It encompassed the island of Varaldsøy and several smaller surrounding islands in the Hardangerfjord.
History:
The municipality was established on January 1, 1902, when it was separated from the larger municipality of Strandebarm. It existed as an independent municipality until January 1, 1964, when it was merged back into Strandebarm. Strandebarm, in turn, was later merged into the municipality of Kvinnherad.
Geography:
Varaldsøy municipality comprised a group of islands situated in the Hardangerfjord. The namesake island, Varaldsøy, was the largest in the municipality. The landscape was characterized by coastal mountains and agricultural land, primarily used for farming.
Administration:
During its existence, Varaldsøy had its own municipal council and administration, responsible for local governance and public services within its borders.
Population:
The population of Varaldsøy was relatively small, typical of island communities in Norway. Numbers fluctuated throughout its existence, but remained generally low.
Economy:
The primary industries in Varaldsøy were traditionally agriculture and fishing. The island's location on the Hardangerfjord provided opportunities for fishing and aquaculture.
Legacy:
While no longer an independent municipality, the name Varaldsøy persists as the name of the island and a geographical area within Kvinnherad municipality. The history and culture of the former municipality remain part of the local identity.
