Ban'ei

Ban'ei (ばんえい, 輓曳) refers to a style of draft horse racing unique to Hokkaido, Japan. Unlike traditional horse racing where horses compete for speed on a flat track, Ban'ei racing involves heavily weighted sleds (up to a ton) being pulled by draft horses over an undulating dirt track. The horses are judged not only on speed but also on their strength, stamina, and ability to navigate the obstacles on the course.

The sport originated from agricultural practices in Hokkaido, where horses were used for heavy farm work. Farmers would compete to see whose horse was the strongest and could pull the heaviest loads, leading to the formalized sport of Ban'ei racing.

The racecourse features two steep, sandy hills that horses must overcome. Jockeys, known as "kikushu" (騎手), actively guide their horses, using reins, whips, and vocal commands to encourage them. Strategic use of pauses and tactical planning are vital for conserving the horse's energy and successfully completing the course.

Ban'ei racing is a significant part of Hokkaido's cultural heritage and draws a large audience. The only remaining Ban'ei racecourse is located in Obihiro, Hokkaido. The survival of Ban'ei racing has faced challenges, but ongoing efforts are made to preserve this unique sporting tradition.
